John William "Bill" Roberts was born on March 21, 1919 in Ft. Atkinson, Wisconsin. He received a B.A. from Ripon College in 1941, and served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946. He worked as a radio news reporter for WOC in Davenport, Iowa, 1946 to 1948, and he was a radio news reporter and television anchorman at station WMT in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, 1948 to 1958.
